My friend’s child has cancer: what can I do to help?
Be a good listener; offer specific forms of help such as babysitting, cooking, or housecleaning; keep checking back and offering your support to show the family they are not forgotten, because cancer treatments go on for many months. We have some support groups listed on the "Links" page of this site.
How do I help someone who has lost a loved one? Don't be afraid to talk about the loved one. I remember reading a quote from another mother who'd lost her child and she said "hearing her name may bring tears to my eyes, but it's music to my ears". It's comforting to know that others haven't forgotten and aren't avoiding the conversations out of fear of hurting the one who is grieving. Even though life does go forward, the parent or friend may feel that they are all alone, especially when people stop "remembering" with them. It reassures them that the life their loved one lived wasn't in vain. Please go to our "Links" page and you will find some support groups that may be a source of comfort.
